Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy is (part of) a physiotherapeutic treatment and after referral from a veterinarian. The animal physiotherapist can make use of an aqua trainer; a container that can be filled with water, with a treadmill on the bottom so that movement can be controlled. In addition, hydrotherapy can be exercised in a pool or outdoor waters in the summer. Indications for hydrotherapy include: rehabilitation after surgery or injury, when recovery of muscle strength and endurance are desired. Hydrotherapy or swim training can make a useful contribution to recovery and rehabilitation, but is in some cases contraindicated. One should also take into account the circumstances, including the nature of the water (steep slope or stairs), and shaking dry after swimming.

In AVOM swimming or hydrotherapy is prescribed as an adjunctive therapy, if indicated.
